Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby…

Tonight I am off to a concert at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge. I have often walked past this tiny unobtrusive place on the tail end of Piccadilly’s High Street without giving it a second glance. A slightly grimy looking venue, and usually papered in ‘Manc Club Night’ posters, it is customarily home to rock and roll/indie acts. I was therefore surprised somewhat to find a forthcoming billing for two country music artists, which is how I find myself here, on this evening, queuing excitedly for the doors to open. Continue reading “Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby…”

cruzin’

I’ve been reliably informed that I should head up to ‘The Mystery Spot’ before leaving Santa Cruz today. Located in a forest of redwood trees, the mystery is that’s there’s some (alleged) gravitational anomaly on the sight which causes weird changes in perception and height. Continue reading “cruzin’”

Bonnie and Clyde

Today I’m going to go shoot a vintage rifle. It’s a beautiful old thing with a deep mahogany coloured wooden stock. It reminds me of the one in the pictures of Bonnie pointing it at Clyde i’ve seen over in Dallas. Continue reading “Bonnie and Clyde”

This ain’t my first rodeo cowboy…

Except of course, that it is. Today I’ve taken the TRE train an hour West of Dallas to Fort Worth to hit up The Stockyards. Continue reading “This ain’t my first rodeo cowboy…”

Purple rain

Yuk. My mouth tastes like last night’s sangrita (that’s a sangria flavour margarita to the uninformed). Although tequila is a pretty grim flavour for 10am, it is at least testament to the fun I had yesterday evening here in Uptown. Continue reading “Purple rain”

Cashing out

It’s predicted to thunderstorm today so I head out early to walk up to Vanderbilt Campus before I drown in hot rain. It’s a beautifully expansive campus and it’s leafy trees, lush grasses and old brick and stone buildings remind me a lot of Durham. Continue reading “Cashing out”

Music City

I wake up with an extremely sore head today and I’m feeling a little bit sorry for myself; not least of all because I have to leave the wonder of New Orleans behind me today.

Breakfast is a pleasure of plantain, eggs, avocado and salsa but I still can’t shake my hesitancy or my hangover. Continue reading “Music City”

An idiot walks into the projects and says…

I’ve been in Harlem for at least 2 hours now. I’ve been up to Columbia Campus and given myself an internal high five at stomping around the grounds of an Ivy League College (they have bleachers for frick’s sake!!) and now I’m heading back to 125th. I got this. Continue reading “An idiot walks into the projects and says…”
