A Lady Like THAT

It’s a balmy Wednesday evening here in Manchester and I’m heading to The Castle Hotel, an intimate live music venue hidden away on Oldham Street, to watch Ingrid Andress play.

The small back room is already filling up nicely with eager patrons, eerily lit by the hot blue lights coming from the stage where instruments await their players.

Suddenly there’s a rush of movement cutting through the chatter as a young woman weaves her way with purpose through the crowds to the front before hopping on the stage and grabbing a waiting guitar. Continue reading “A Lady Like THAT”

This must be the place.

When I woke up that Tuesday morning, it was, to all intents and purposes, an ordinary day. Except of course, It wasn’t. Continue reading “This must be the place.”

Some like it hot.

Now I like it hot just as much as the next person. For example, the current pleasant weather we are experiencing across the UK?  I very much like this hot. I also like a good cup of hot strong coffee, hot peppery chillies in food, and a hot glowing fire in deepest darkest winter… Continue reading “Some like it hot.”

Wheel of fortune

I adore fairy stories. The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, even Disney. They’ve all been a staple part of my reading diet circa ‘a long, long time ago’. Hence how I find myself here this evening, at a concert about a fairy tale. When my friend invited me to join her for this Hallé orchestra event, she knew I’d say ‘yes!’ straight away given our current mutual obsession with ‘Once Upon a Time’ a TV show featuring all your favourite characters as they battle evil, cross realms, and fire off copious amounts of magic spells. Smells like team spirit

Today I am off to the football. Not the biggest fan of team sports in general, and having missed the last 7 or so matches, it has been not-so-subtlety suggested that this morning I get my ass in gear, and spend the day with my father at the game. Coat and gloves on, I head out early so we can grab a hearty breakfast before making our way to Old Trafford. Continue reading “Smells like team spirit”

London calling…

Some days I really miss London. I miss the aimless wanderings in my own world, amidst the heaving throng of city dwellers. I miss being anonymous. Continue reading “London calling…”

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby…

Tonight I am off to a concert at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge. I have often walked past this tiny unobtrusive place on the tail end of Piccadilly’s High Street without giving it a second glance. A slightly grimy looking venue, and usually papered in ‘Manc Club Night’ posters, it is customarily home to rock and roll/indie acts. I was therefore surprised somewhat to find a forthcoming billing for two country music artists, which is how I find myself here, on this evening, queuing excitedly for the doors to open. Continue reading “Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby…”

A blooming good night

The first few weeks back at work after the Christmas break have given me the January blues. To rally everyone back into the festive spirit however, Manchester has decided to offer 50% off the bill at a lot of it’s restaurants for the entire month. Obviously it’s a cunning ploy to keep us all eating, drinking, spending, and generally pretending that there’s thing in life to look forward to aside from the freezing rain and dark gloomy nights. Continue reading “A blooming good night”
