Islands in the stream

It’s raining today in Nashville. Not a little one hour tropical storm i’m used to in the USA, but a full blown grey sky, relentless British drizzle. Yuk. Fortunately I have my trusty travel umbrella to hand, although I’m massively regretting the open toed sandals, seeing as i’m now probably going to contract trench foot. You don’t know Jack.

There’s two Jack’s I love in life, Daniel and White, and both are conveniently located here in Tennessee.

Today I’m heading out to Lynchburg to tour the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. Fantasising about visiting ever since I first caught sight of the JD posters in their black and white on the London Underground; I’m excited to take a tour of Old Number 7. Continue reading “You don’t know Jack.”

These boots weren’t made for walking…

I wake up today still a little dazed and head out for an early morning stroll. The streets are being hosed down after a colour run and the pavement is covered in streams of yellows and oranges. It’s barely even 10, but already I hear live country music coming out of the venues on Broadway. Continue reading “These boots weren’t made for walking…”

Music City

I wake up with an extremely sore head today and I’m feeling a little bit sorry for myself; not least of all because I have to leave the wonder of New Orleans behind me today.

Breakfast is a pleasure of plantain, eggs, avocado and salsa but I still can’t shake my hesitancy or my hangover. Continue reading “Music City”

Southern Comfort

I love New Orleans. Everyone here is so friendly. People greet each other in the street, call hellos and comment on the weather from their front porches. It’s a great little community. Hapless Birt has been left behind momentarily in favour of a Louisiana lilt. After being advised to imagine my words stacked together like soldiers falling lazily into each other, I’m practicing a smooth southern drawl and I’m a regular dandy. Continue reading “Southern Comfort”

The Louisiana purchase

Coffee. I need coffee. And breakfast. And water, definitely water. My stream of consciousness this morning waking up on my first full day in here in New Orleans following a raucous evening. I head to Horn, a cute little cafe on Touro and acquire myself something called a ‘Jewish Coonass’. It’s a crawfish and latke combo and damn, is it good. A takeout box for leftovers and I head out into the sun. Continue reading “The Louisiana purchase”

Les gens de libres

It’s time to move on from the idyllic white sandy beaches of Florida today, and I watch out the windows, bidding farewell to the lagoons as we head to the airport. A brilliant orange butterfly dips up and down beside us keeping pace with the car, then soars up out of sight. Continue reading “Les gens de libres”

Party in the city where the heat is on

I awake with the sun rising over The Atlantic, a brilliant pink, and steal a few more minutes of slumber. I’m up early today to head to Miami and picking up the Tri-rail double decker train, I set off on my long journey. Will Smith is on my iPod singing about South Beach as we set off, and I’m in the zone. Continue reading “Party in the city where the heat is on”

And then the rains came…

Today it’s raining in South Florida. Not just raining though, a torrential downpour which has laid waste to my plans for more sunbathing time. This is rather sad as I really was hoping to even out that giraffe tan I’ve acquired on my feet before I leave, but c’est la vie. Continue reading “And then the rains came…”
